We are being flooded with lazy, prompt-engineered slop that is killing the credibility of every small business that partakes. You’ve all seen it. Small businesses all using the same tired prompts to generate the same cluttered graphics. By using AI to “readily generate flyers,” you might be saving twenty minutes, but you are choosing a shortcut that bypasses the soul of your business, and frankly, it looks horrible.
I say this as a proponent of AI. I’ve spent the last 15 years in the trenches of the communications industry. I’ve worked as a graphic designer, a communications director, and every role in between. I’ve coached hundreds of entrepreneurs and businesses of every size, and I’m telling you straight: technological efficiency is a survival strategy, not a luxury.
I don’t want to bash AI. I use it every single day in my own consulting business. But right now, I see my community falling into a dangerous trap.
We are currently drowning in a “copycat-crap-content” flood. When businesses feed identical prompts into identical tools, they get identical results, just with slightly different neon colors or warped fonts. If your visuals blend into everything else on the timeline, that distinctiveness is dead. When you “optimize” by pumping out instant, generic graphics, you are actually training the consumer’s brain to scroll right past you. You aren’t being efficient; you’re becoming invisible.
You don’t need a thousand-dollar agency retainer to fix this. Authenticity is actually cheaper than the “pro” AI prompts people are paying for. We all carry high-quality cameras in our back pockets. Use them. A raw smartphone photo of your actual storefront, your team, or your products beats a “perfect” AI hallucination every time, because it’s a photo of something your customers can walk in and see. If you use design tools like Canva or Adobe, make real choices about readability and tone. And here’s a simple test before you post anything: cover up your logo. If nobody could tell the graphic was yours, it isn’t marketing your business. It’s marketing nothing.
Use AI to support the work, not to replace the thinking. Let it handle the data, the scheduling, the behind-the-scenes lifting. But when it comes to the face of your business, keep it human. The most successful local brands won’t be the ones producing the fastest flyers. They’ll be the ones customers actually recognize.
Your customers are craving a signal of reality in a world of digital noise. Don’t let your business become part of that noise.
Stop generating slop. Choose authenticity.
